As a child, she persuaded her parents to let her take flying lessons. By 12, Betty made her first flight alone, though not legally permitted to do so until she turned 16.

During the 1940s, female pilots were mostly prevented from commercial and military flying. So Betty Skelton decided to use her flight skills in aerobatics(特技飞行),performing difficult turns, drops, and other exercises. She began performing and competing around the country.

Located just on the edge of Arabian Sea, Dabla Paro is supposed to be one of the oldest fisherman villages. Lined with broken boats lying outside, the village paints the picture of neglect and State’s unconcern towards the residents.

The group of young women carrying pots on their heads move towards a small hole, filled with dirty water. Despite being a historical settlement, the village has been lacking in drinking water, streetlights, health units and even a school. The residents of the village after getting disappointed from the state-run department to provide them with clean water, broke a pipeline passing near the village and dug a small pond to collect water.

Everyday, young girls and women of the village fetch the pond water for their families. Due to the unsafe collecting method, the water gets polluted and thus, skin problems and other waterborne illnesses are common among the villagers, and as usual, women and children are the worst victims.

Though there are dozens of small settlements, traditional villages of native fisher folk and farmers are still living without proper water supply schemes.

Apart from using the water from the pond for cooking and drinking purposes, the women also wash clothes in the pool every day. “In the absence of water facility in our village, life is very tough, especially for women and children,” said Safia, a mother of three.

According to official data, out of the total 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Sindh, the most important target to reduce mortality rate of children under 5, has now become impossible to achieve. Health experts say that waterborne illnesses are a major killer for children.

A recent report issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the status of MDGs in Sindh stated that the supply of safe drinking water in Sindh is still a long way. Most of the residents of these villages complain that they have always supported the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), but while the party is in power, the villagers stay neglected till the next voting season.

Honeybee populations have been mysteriously decreasing all over the world. Since 2007, research and evidence have shown that the depopulation has destroyed bee colonies. However, what is actually causing the bees to die? This, considering honeybees are responsible for pollinating(对…授粉) well over 100 different fruits and vegetables, would be absolutely devastating for humankind. Are humans actually any closer to finding a solution that will stop the species from becoming extinct?

As of 2013, as many scientists believe that the use of pesticides and chemicals on crops is one of the reasons for the decline in bees. Many countries in Europe including France and Italy have banned the use of many dangerous chemicals and pesticides on crops that honeybees are attracted to. This proposal was launched in January of 2013. However, the United States and the United Kingdom are yet to fulfill such measures.

A March 2013 report states that scientific studies have shown that many pesticides affect the memory of honeybees, meaning that when exposed to pesticides, they will simply forget where their nest or hive(蜂房) is and never return home again and die in the open. This would explain the lack of dead bodies. If a honeybee forgets the location of its colony, flies away into a forest and dies of confusing exposure, it is only natural that the bee owner would never see that bee again.

A more side to the story however reveals another threat to the species that actually isn’t man-made. Known as a “Zombie Fly Parasite(寄生虫)”, this infectious strain is passed onto the abdomen(腹部) of a honeybee by contagious flies. This infection takes control of the bee, “turning it into a zombie”, and while aimlessly being controlled, the parasite fly and its larvae( 幼虫) will then infect other hosts, effectively turning them into mindless zombies.

With new studies revealing potential causes of the dying honeybee population, will mankind now take action to prevent the soon to be endangered species from completely dying out?

9.According to this text, the decline in honeybees is due to _______

  A. the use of pesticides and chemicals on crops

  B. the ban of the use of chemicals and pesticides

  C. the work to pollinate over 100 different fruits and vegetables

  D. the measures taken by the US and the UK

10.Why do bee owners not find the dead bodies of bees?

  A. Because the bees live their new lives in a forest.

  B. Because the parasite fly has eaten the dead bodies

  C. Because the bees lose memories and die in the wild.

  D. Because the exposure means death for bees.

  11.Zombie Fly Parasite_______.

  A. is carried by a zombieB. is a mindless zombie

  C. can infect other parasitesD. can control bees

12.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

  A. Honeybee Population Have Been DecreasingB. What’s Killing off the Honeybees?

  C. How to Stop the Depopulation of Bees?D. Take Action to Protect the Honeybees
